PRIME MINISTER ANSWERS THE OPEN LETTER FROM DIN L-ART ĦELWA

The Prime Minister has confirmed that the new Strategic Plan will be brought before Parliament for debate and approval and that there is no intention to amend legislation which will enable approval by the Minister alone.   This was confirmed by the Prime Minister in his response of the 17th November to Din l-Art Ħelwa’s letter regarding the state of the environment published on the 31st October.  The six serving and former Presidents of the organisation signed the Open Letter.

In its further response to the Prime Minister, Din l-Art Ħelwa has noted with satisfaction that the new Strategic Plan will indeed be brought to parliament for debate and approval, but stated that the Prime Minister has not allayed the organization’s concerns about major issues, namely the format and content of the draft Strategic Plan, the rural policy, the policy for high-rise buildings and the call for expressions of interest for land reclamation in the absence of a marine spatial plan.

The organisation reiterated its plea to the Prime Minister to ensure that his legacy to Malta is remembered for the improvements which have been made to this country, and not for the further and rapid degradation of the built and rural environment.
