« The delicate sound of a virtuoso »

On Thursday 23 March, 7.00 pm:  To celebrate the completion of the restoration of the four side Altars at Our Lady of Victory Church, Din l-Art Ħelwa is glad to host Classic Guitar virtuoso Mme.  Liat Cohen who will perform solo in the newly restored surroundings of Valletta’s oldest church (1566).  Details for bookings and program will soon be published.

Liat Cohen returns to Malta by general request.

A pioneer of the classical guitar renaissance, and contemporary music, Liat Cohen gave her first professional recital when she was only 14… « Princess of the classical guitar » (Evene), her playing is delicate, sensual, inventive, personal and virtuosic.

Liat Cohen, essentially soloist, is often compared both to Maria Callas and Andres Segovia for her unique artistic authenticity. Her musical richness and excellence lead her to collaborate with prestigious conductors (Jacques Mercier, Frédéric Chaslin, Jan Talich, Gisèle Ben-Dor) and orchestras (Jerusalem Symphonic Orchestra, Israel Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lorraine, Bern Orchestra, Melbourne Symphonic Orchestra, Haifa Symphonic Orchestra, Istanbul Symphonic Orchestra, Talich Chamber Orchestra, Prazak Quartet, Zemlinsky Quartet…), and also to give performances in the most important musical venues: Prag Rudolphinum, Radio-France, Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris), Palais des Beaux-Arts (Brussels), Cerclo de Bellas Artes (Madrid), Palazzo Barberini (Rome), Salle Cortot (Paris), National Theater of Costa Rica, Montpellier Opera, Skirball Cultural Center (Los Angeles), Jerusalem Theater… and to participate to numerous international festivals (Gstaad, Montpellier, Israel Festival, Buenos Aires Guitarras del mundo, London, Melilla, Cordoba…).

Awarded a ‘First Prize’ from the Paris Conservatory, she graduated from the Schola Cantorum (‘Concert’ prize, unanimous jury with highest honors), and the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris (‘musical performance’ prize, unanimous jury). Liat Cohen is the first guitarist to ever win the Nadia and Lili Boulanger Prize (Fondation de France). Prizewinner of numerous international guitar competitions, especially those of Rome, Paris and Tel-Aviv, she concertizes on five continents in a successful career rich in musical relations.

Recognized among the world best guitarists by Guitariste and Classical Guitar magazines, Liat Cohen «is a true virtuoso guitarist, who continues the great tradition established by the legendary André Segovia, who transformed the intimate guitar into a magnificent solo instrument, projecting over large auditorium concerts while maintaining the warm & gentle nuances of the instrument.» (Prof. Y. Hirshberg)
