In June 2007, Din l-Art Helwa organised a photographic competition with the aim of raising awareness of our marine environment, as part of Din l-Art Helwa’s Blue Campaign. Dr Stanley Farrugia Randon organised the competition, and judged the entries together with well-known photographer Kurt Arrigo and Din l-Art Helwa Council member and photographer Joe Chetcuti.

At an event held at the Din l-Art Helwa headquarters on 27th June, Executive President Martin Galea announced the winning entries of the competition, each of which was awarded a prize of Lm100.

The winner of the category highlighting Marine Pollution was Neil Jarett, with his winning entry ‘Neglect in our Harbours’, a photo of polluted waters in Bugibba. This was Neil Jarret’s first entry in a photographic competition.

The winner of the category highlighting the Beauty of the Marine Environment was Mario Micallef with a photograph entitled ‘Cirkewwa Anchor with Squid Eggs’, a unique and colourful picture capturing the unusual image of a nest of tubular squid eggs attached to an anchor seen on the seabed in Cirkewwa.

Din l-Art Helwa thanks all the participants for their efforts and hopes to make this Marine Photographi Competition an annual event.
